My lonely childhood days birthed my storytelling skill...
Growing up, I used to read a lot. I'd read whatever bo…Growing up, I used to read a lot. I'd read whatever books I could find except romance (I thought it was stupid).
Horror, action, thriller, adventure, werewolves (my all-time fave), so long as it was a book, I'd read it anyway.
The main reason for this was… I led a pretty lonely life growing up (not much has changed though)
I didn't have any friends to play with, I have siblings, but I grew up with my aunt, and her kids were too young…
So my after-school hours and weekends were spent reading.
Now, before you pity me, and empathize with me, that lonely childhood life had a great impact on me. (We'll get to it in a minute)
Sometimes I'd sacrifice food just to complete a book I'm reading.
This continued until I got into high school, and I could rarely find books to read.
I went back to being that bored teenager until I found yet another solution…
Writing.
My notes were always up to date, but I had a bunch of lazy ass male classmates that NEVER completed their notes.
So for a small favor, I'd help them complete their notes.
And sometimes I'll ask for my teacher's notebook and write ahead of the class.
At a point, I stopped helping niggas complete their notes, and I started writing stories…
Although they never got published, I didn't care, I wrote them still.
Okay, let me answer the question in your mind now before we proceed
Didn't you have a phone?
Hell No! 😂 I only got a phone when I graduated high school.
Yes, I did own a button phone for a couple of weeks, but nothing that could access the internet.
Moving on…
My childhood consisted of me reading and writing.
Now, to the impact that lonely childhood life has on me now…
What you are reading right now😁😁
Yes, you're right, my storytelling skill.
I haven't read any books on storytelling, or paid for a course or coaching… none of that.
Everything I know today about writing stories, and storytelling in general was gotten from my lonely childhood days (reading and writing)
This whole story and my life are proof that action and practice will outweigh theories and words.
Now this is an assignment for you…
Download Wattpad, or any alternative app, pick a book, and for at least 20 minutes every day, make sure to read it. Do this for 30 days, and then try rewriting the same story you read in your words and voice.
Repeat this exercise for 60 days, and compare your before and after.
That is the ultimate hack for learning and perfecting the art of storytelling.
In last week's email, I promised to share the story of how I learned storytelling, and how you too can, and as promised, this is it...
The ball’s in your court now, will you take action or not?
That's it for today's email…
One last thing before you go, if I made it to your spam or promotions folder, kindly drag my ass to your primary inbox… I’d appreciate it.
With that being said, Ciao for now 🙂🤗
